Acura MDX History
The Acura MDX is a luxury midsize crossover SUV that debuted in 2000 for the 2001 model year, produced by Honda's Acura division. It is known for combining performance, luxury, and utility, and has remained one of the best-selling vehicles in Acura’s lineup. The MDX was one of the first luxury SUVs to feature a third-row seat, appealing to families seeking a premium driving experience.
First Generation (2001–2006)
The MDX was launched as Acura's first full-size SUV and replaced the Acura SLX, a rebadged Isuzu Trooper. This first-generation model came with a 3.5-liter V6 engine producing 240 horsepower and was equipped with Honda’s VTM-4 all-wheel-drive (AWD) system, designed to enhance traction. It quickly garnered attention and was named Motor Trend’s 2001 SUV of the Year, while also receiving high safety ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
Second Generation (2007–2013)
The second generation arrived in 2006 for the 2007 model year, showcasing a more aggressive and sporty design. It was powered by a 3.7-liter V6 engine producing 300 horsepower and introduced Acura’s Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) system for improved handling. Key features included a navigation system, Bluetooth, and a rearview camera. In 2009, a refresh added a more refined look and a 6-speed automatic transmission.
Third Generation (2014–2020)
For the 2014 model year, the third generation MDX made its debut, with a redesigned look aimed at improving aerodynamics and fuel efficiency. It featured a 3.5-liter direct-injected V6 engine producing 290 horsepower, along with Acura’s Earth Dreams technology. The introduction of a 9-speed automatic transmission improved performance, while new safety and driver-assist features, including Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane Keeping Assist, were also added. A facelift in 2016 introduced the Diamond Pentagon Grille and enhanced technology offerings.
Fourth Generation (2022–present)
The fourth generation, launched in 2020 for the 2022 model year, saw significant upgrades. Built on a new platform, it offered improved handling and body rigidity. A 3.5-liter V6 engine with 290 horsepower powers the standard model, while the MDX Type S performance variant features a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 engine producing 355 horsepower. The interior underwent a comprehensive update, incorporating a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, True Touchpad Interface, and enhanced smartphone integration with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Other highlights include a 10-speed automatic transmission and Acura’s ELS Studio 3D audio system.
